 Guadalupe & Rachel love their bright futures. The Pathway to Promise is an Abstinence Only Education Program providing services to 12-19 yr old Brevard County residents, in an effort to reduce teen sexual activity, teen pregnancy, and the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. The program curriculum consists of 2) two 2 ½ hr sessions, or (1) one 5 hour education session with materials approved by the A-H criteria required by the Florida Department of Health for Abstinence Education.
Topics will include the following: The Risks of STDs and HIV/AIDS Often believing “It can’t happen to me,” students hear from teens who have STDs and AIDS. They study the most common STDs, how STDs are spread, and the need for compassion.
Pressures to be Sexually Active Students identify and discuss four major pressures, including alcohol use and abuse, which contribute to teens’ sexual activity, and they learn the role of respect in overcoming these pressures.
The Need to Speak Up After learning the skills of saying “NO”, students put them into practice finding out that it often takes courage.
Show It: The Need to Be Assertive Four role-plays provide practical ways for teens to test their newly acquired skills as they recognize the need for perseverance.
 Irene made a promise. My Family, Myself (Urban) “My Family” explores the changing relationships that youths have with their parents, guardians, and siblings as they mature and, it shows how these relationships affect their decision-making. “My Self” looks at youths’ feelings of self-esteem and self-respect and the role that they play when faced with difficult choices.
Upon completion of the abstinence only education program, the participant will have: - increased knowledge about prevention of HIV, STDs and pregnancy
- more positive attitudes/beliefs about abstinence
- increased confidence in their ability to withstand peer pressure
- stronger intentions to abstain from sex
- improved social skills and emotional control
- a stronger sense of pride and responsibility for making a difference
